Fujitsu V8 Supercars
United Oil Australia are proud sponsors of the 2006 Fujitsu V8 Supercar program. Young driver, Brett Hobson is the up and coming star of the V8 Supercar development series.
"First time Bathurst rookie,
Brett Hobson of United Oil Racing had his first Bathurst experience today during practice for the 2006 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series."
"What an awesome track" commented Brett. "If there was ever any doubt, this track would turn you into a motorsport convert for life. The car is great and I am improving with every lap I do".
The United Oil Racing team worked incrementally as Brett's confidence in the car and his knowledge of the track grew. During the first session at 9:10 am the #96 BA Falcon finished 21st after experiencing two minor engine related problems.
The crew made a number of suspension changes for the second session and Brett was able to move up to 17th fastest, importantly as this put him in the top 50% for qualifying on Friday morning.
"It was a very important part of our strategy that Brett be in the top 50% for qualifying as that group qualifies at 8:30am rather than at 8am," commented Darren King, United Oil Racing Chief Engineer "The track will improve during the first session which should increase our chance of a good qualifying performance."
"The car was definitely better during the second session" said Brett. "It had much better drive and felt much stronger across the top of the mountain.
"It is starting to get to the point that I feel confident that the United Oil BA Falcon will do what I need it to do, we definitely have a great race package."
The team will continue to improve setup during Thursday evening in preparation for early Friday qualifying.
The Hobson Motorsport crew rolled the car out for qualifying at 8:30am Friday morning. Qualifying 20th was not in the master plan but that was the result."The car is not quite right in the rear" said Brett. "We will continue to work on it for Race 1 once we have analysed the data".
Starting from grid 20 for an action packed race one, Brett moved forward to 18h position during the opening laps and after two safety car periods and a massive crash at the top of the mountain Brett finished in 16th spot.
As a result of the crash in race one, Brett's starting position for Saturdays Race two was improved to 14th position. The United Oil Racing team made a number of changes to the BA Falcon on Friday night which resulted in a dramatically improved car.
"The rear of the car had dramatically better drive and was a much nicer car to drive" said Brett. After a blinding start Brett worked his way up to 12th spot and continued on to finsih a fantastic 11th.
Hobson Motorsport would like to send its best wishes to fellow competitors Mark Porter and David Clarke who were injured during Race one for speedy recoveries.
The Hooters Australia - New Zealand supported duo of Brett Hobson and Terry Wyhoon continued to improve during todays second race for the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series at Bathurst's Mount Panorama, both drivers finding significant gains, although unable to match the 'factory' supported drivers who continued to dominate the front of the field.
Starting sixteenth, Hobson was quickly into the top ten, passing Dick John Racing's Grant Denyer for ninth in the opening laps, before a lap seven caution period closed the field up behind the pace car, reducing Hobson's lead over Denyer to a car length. "I managed to keep in front of him after the restart for a couple of laps, but the team suggested I let him by and try and get the tow down Conrod," Brett confirmed afterwards. "It sounded like a good plan, but those DJR cars are just so fast on the straights, I couldn't stick with him; along with the Perkins cars, they're jets in a straight line, in a class of their own. With the older cars the rest of us have got, we just can't match their pace, so he managed to get away."
Wyhoon too started brilliantly, taking six cars in the opening lap, but like Hobson, the mid-race caution period cost him a significant advantage over the trailing cars. "The car was an improvement over yesterday, but like Brett, we were just down on power."
Like Hobson, Wyhoon was tied in with his own battle with a DJR Falcon, Marcus LaDelle working his way through from the back of the field courtesy of contact with team-mate Denyer in the opening race. "I held him off earlier, and could lose him across the top, but they're just so fast up and down the mountain, so after the restart he just drove away."
By race end, Hobson was also passed by Michael Caruso, who had to work his way through the field after early race contact, dropping the Sydney-sider back to a strong eleventh at the flag. A visibly exhausted Hobson was reflective post race, having worked the car hard in the closing stages in an effort to gain a top ten finish.
"The car was excellent in the first half of the race, but the suspension issue we've had since day one was not right, and after the restart, we just didn't have the pace to hold Denyer and Caruso out.
All in all though, considering what has happened this weekend I'm proud of what we've achieved in the United Oils/Hooters Falcon; despite being my first ever Bathurst, we've run competitively inside the top ten, and finished with a straight car. You probably couldn't ask for any better."
Wyhoon too dropped back a couple of spots in the closing laps, but recorded a fifteenth place finish, a stunning effort following the disappointment of qualifying 38th.
"In the end I think engine performance cost us. Looking at the data, we were down about two seconds a lap on where we should have been, and that would have given us the opportunity to run inside the top ten, but it wasn't to be. In the end though, we've finished with a straight car and a wealth of knowledge and experience, but I think what we've also learned, is that we need to do some work on the bottom end of the engine; once we get the horsepower back, we should be able to run well inside the top ten."
Both Hooters cars will compete in the final round of the 2006 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, scheduled for Phillip Island on December 8-10.

Husky/PBOZ Racing Suzuki Sidecar
Hi to all our sponsors and supporters,
Central Coast Speedway was host to the Central Coast Cup held on Saturday night.
Great night for racing!
The Husky/PBOZ Racing Suzuki Sidecar piloted by Darren Cafe & Don Morris had another excellent outing
finishing 2nd in the final to current Aussie Title finalist Grant Bond/Glen Cox combination.
Track was very slick and hard to pass. Unusual for sidecar racing.
In heat 3, Cafe/Morris shot out the gates to head, favourites Bond/Cox before taking a well earned win on the new Suzuki.
"To beat Grant and Glen means we are not far off the pace, it's starting to come together" Darren said after the win.
The Team is still learning daily about the intricate set up of the new bike and 2nd in the final was well deserved.
Be sure to check out the new Team apparel at the next meeting you visit, it's AWESOME!
Also racers, check out the new range of Husky and United Oil products
